• The Truth About Mark Driscoll’s Tweet

Apparently Christian mega-church pastor, Mark Driscoll put out an interesting Tweet yesterday and liberal and progressive Christians are going nuts. They shouldn’t because there is a hidden truth to Driscoll’s Tweet. This is what he had to say:

“Praying for our president, who today will place his hand on a Bible he does not believe to take an oath to a God he likely does not know.”

Let us be clear here. Driscoll is not just a mega-church pastor. They are a dime a dozen these days. I would say that Driscoll was a cult leader, but all religious leaders are cult leaders when you get down to it. But if there were a sliding scale of cult leaders, he would certainly be much closer to the Warren Jeffs end of the scale.

With that said, let’s get to the Tweet itself. There are essentially two accusations here. The first is that the President does not believe in the Bible. Driscoll is attempting to imply here that Obama is not a Christian and that he is “secret Muslim.” Obviously that is ridiculous, but I would agree with Driscoll that Obama doesn’t actually believe the Bible. I will however challenge that Driscoll too doesn’t believe the Bible. In fact, I challenge any one to find me a single Christian who actually believes the Bible… all of it!

It can’t be done. You see, there are many homophobic Christians in this country, but none of them actually follow the Bible’s command to put them to death. No Christian is out there murdering disobedient children or marrying their dead brother’s widow. Jesus said to give all your money away and to date I have met exactly one Christian who even attempted that seriously. Driscoll sure as Hell isn’t. I haven’t even gotten to the mixed clothing, dietary laws, and what women need to do while on their period.

Let’s just stick to the J-man for now. I mentioned the whole giving all your money away thing already. While he did instruct his followers to shout your beliefs from the rooftops, he also warned not to shout your beliefs in public and to pray silently in a closet. Now things are getting confusing. Love your neighbor, but hate your family? What if you live next to your family? What do you do?

I could of course go on and on here, but I want to get to the second accusation. Driscoll is claiming that Obama doesn’t know God. Well shit, I have yet to meet anyone who has met any deities. Plus, even if one did manage to meet a deity on the road somewhere, how could anyone seriously claim to truly know that God. Even the Virgin Mary can’t claim that… she was a virgin after all.

Christians are always saying that we can’t know the mind of God. So why would anyone expect that the President would know God? But I do think it is funny that Driscoll isn’t sure if the President knows the mind of God or not. He did say that Obama “likely does not know” God.

Now of course we all know that this is just another way for Driscoll to claim that Obama is a secret Muslim or something. But Driscoll shouldn’t judge Obama in that fashion. I guess that is just evidence that he doesn’t believe in the Bible either. He should just turn the other cheek and mind his own business. Oh, and he should pay taxes too. Jesus said to give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and give unto God what is Gods. Tax money should be given unto Caesar! Pay up Mark!
