• Antivaxxers succeed in Spain — new case of diphtheria… after 28 years

Two days ago, Spain woke up to this bad news:

A 6 year old boy was admitted to intensive care at the Hospital de la Vall d’Hebron with diphtheria. It is the first recorded case in Spain since 1987 according to the Ministry of Health. The little boy is in critical condition, according to sources of the Generalitat, who have claimed to not know where and how he contracted the bacteria.

According to the (Spanish) PuffHo, the kid’s parents chose not to vaccinate him against diphtheria.

Even if the boy survives, he is already an innocent victim of irrational beliefs. People who won’t vaccinate their kids are not fit to be parents — they should be tried and prosecuted.

I think the best case for vaccination and against antivaxxers lies so far is this Penn & Teller: Bullshit!‘s bit:

If, after watching that, you’re still against vaccines, you shouldn’t be in charge of any children nor be giving health advice.

Vaccination is a kid’s right, not their parents’.
