Liberal-minded Vermont has become the third US state to allow doctor-assisted suicide, letting terminally ill patients request lethal medication from physicians.
Governor Peter Shumlin, a Democrat, stated he will sign the End of Life Choice Bill, approved Monday by the House of Representatives in the state capital Montpelier by a 75-65 vote.
Oregon and Washington already allow doctor-assisted suicide. But Vermont, a small rural state in New England, is the first to do so by a legislative process rather than through a voter-initiated referendum.
This is something I have never been able to wrap my head around: if it’s my life, why do I need anyone else’s permission to put an end to it?
