• Book Bannings and Not Thinking Before Speaking

Hood County Texas (part of the Dallas Fort Worth Metro) is in the news… again. The first time, it was because the county clerk refused to issue marriage licenses to homosexuals, in spite of the US Supreme Court’s ruling. No thanks to our idiot Attorney General who encouraged county clerks to ignore the SCOTUS ruling, setting them up for lawsuits.

But now, there is another LGBT issue in the county. Heaven forbid there are books about LGBT people in the library and some of them are children’s books.  Oh the vapors…

Seriously though, the library and county commissioners have been getting many calls demanding that these books be removed. The books, This Day in June and My Princess Boy, are about a pride parade and a little boy who wears dresses.

Resident expert on the subject of “transvestic behavior” and the “LGBT agenda” had this to say.

“This is information that hits a child’s eyes and goes into their brains before they have a chance to make a decision about it,” [Dave] Eagle said. “As adults we have a duty to protect children’s innocence.”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Let’s file this under “saying stupid things without thinking about the broader implications”. I’ve noticed that this happens very frequently with creationists, politicians, and other people who have no idea what’s really going on. They say something that they think supports their ideas, without realizing the problems that they are causing for themselves.

Here, let me quote some things from another book.

And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. –  Bible : Genesis (19) : 33 – 36.

    and

And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine; and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbours, Which were clothed with blue, captains and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding upon horses. Thus she committed her whoredoms with them, with all them that were the chosen men of Assyria, and with all on whom she doted: with all their idols she defiled herself. Neither left she her whoredoms brought from Egypt: for in her youth they lay with her, and they bruised the breasts of her virginity, and poured their whoredom upon her.  – Bible : Ezekiel (23) : 5 – 8.

    and

And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night: And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart. (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.) So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him, I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows. Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey: He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed. With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him. He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; –  Bible : Proverbs (7) : 7 – 22.

Let’s compare a book about being tolerant and not being a bully to people who are different to the stories of the Bible.

But, reading the comments, this kind of thing is perfectly acceptable to teach to children “before they have a chance to make a decision about it“.

    Hypocrite.

And that’s really the point. And the point of Christianity and other religions from before the founding of the United States. We want religious freedom for us. Not you. We want to be contolling instead of controlled. We want to be in power instead of subjugated.

Fortunately, the librarians are made of adamantium. Do not mess with librarians. They are universally total and complete bad-asses.

The librarians and the library advisory board agreed to keep the books. The county attorney said that to remove them would be censorship and against the law. The county commissioners listened to dozens of people, then told the librarian to keep the books on the shelves.

I want to bring up two more quotes.

“I oppose any attempt at censorship,” said Hood County resident Mickey Shearon, “not in spite of my Christian beliefs, but because of them.”

This is a tolerant person. This is a person that I would much more be willing to trust. Not because they agree with me. But because censorship is bad, no matter what side of the issue you’re on.

The other is from the librarian.

Despite the uproar over the books, Kincaid said she wants people to know that Hood County is not a “backwards place.”

This is something that all atheists, self-styled liberals, and others need to seriously consider. A town is not it’s worst people (or it’s best). A state is not it’s leaders or the majority of voters. There is town, state, or area on Earth that doesn’t have a diversity of opinions.

When people say “maybe Texas should secede”, they are saying that it’s not worth fighting for anymore. That we should subject those citizens like Kincaid (and me) to the same thing that happens in Saudi Arabia and Iran. They are saying that we should just cordon off a part of Earth and say “That’s going to be hell on Earth, nothing will fix, let them all rot.”

I’m not willing to do that. I love my state (the leaders are still morons). I have a child and a home and a history here. I am willing to fight for it… and to fight for tolerance and equality and the rights of everyone, not just the conservatives and religious.
