As the subject of Islam and scientific advance has come up, let me point out that scientific advance is but one part of a much larger thing known as reason. Part of this involves the classical liberal principles of government with a restraint on fanaticism and similar.
In the 1950s, Somalia was an Italian trusteeship, following those principles pretty well. Here is what it looked like:
