Dave Silverman, the president of American Atheists, had a recent interview on the Voice of Russia with Jamila Bey. The central theme of the interview was the hateful backlash against atheists, for trying to be citizens with equal rights as everyone else. There have been slanderous and defamatory insults thrown at us, by both the media and government officals. But, Silverman said, we can live with insults. We cannot live with a second-class citizen status.

I do not agree with Mr. Silverman on everything. But I admire his defiance in the face of hostility. We cannot cave in to those who are trying to silence our voices. We need more people like Silverman standing up for our rights.
