Interviewed by Lee Moore concerning atheist online in-fighting

Lee Moore, one of the hosts of the A-News Podcast who is working toward ‘peace talks’ aimed at putting an end to the online atheist in-fighting, recently asked me some questions in preparation for the upcoming discussions. Following are excerpts from some of the questions:

As an Atheist Activist how do you feel about the current infighting within our community?

I know that you have been labeled as a sexist/misogynist by some who disagree with your stances. Is there any factual basis for these labels or is it just an attempt to discredit you?

I have also noticed a great deal of personal attacks in a forum calling itself the Slymepit. These personal attacks have some well known bloggers over at FtB up in arms. What are your thoughts on this side of the so called “Blog Wars”?

Many Atheists from the most dedicated and celebrated activists to those who are just joining our ranks have chosen to stay out of this conflict. However as time marches on more and more contemplate leaving our movement due to the fact that we are losing our rational high ground. It is obvious to many that this conflict is hurting all of us, what would you like to see done to end this conflict?

I found your interview to be disappointingly general and uneven overall, and the one case for which you give specifics is a sadly outdated rehash. And I say “sadly” because it doesn’t show much in the way of concrete action on your part to move forward in the peace process that you’ve now written two reference posts and had an interview about.

For example, although there had not been a call for a cease-fire until January 30, 2013, how would you compare and contrast your public communications to/about Surly Amy and her public communications to/about you since early October 2012, when the incident you recounted was basically over? Is there any material you produced that you did or have plans to update or footnote–say, your “Saint Surly Amy and the Double Standards” video that you made in late December 2012 (again, a rehash)?

There is one interaction that I know: How would you characterize your Twitter exchange with Surly Amy this past January 19th? It is virtually the same situation, is it not, that you used one of her photographs on your WiS2 donation page without notification or attribution? What prior information had come your way to cause you to do that? Don’t her tweets to you fulfill exactly what you said you’d have liked in the first case?

It may be understandable that–without Lee Moore’s cease-fire call on Jan 30–you didn’t point out that easily resolved situation with Surly Amy in a new tweet, a video, a comment on an existing related post, a new blog post, etc., or that you’d applied for a SurlyGrant the next day. But do you now question why you did the rehash without adding that information to this Feb 12 interview since it is specifically about the peace process?
