• Update: Care to be counted?

The Atheist Census is in full swing again with well over 40k submissions. Just thought you should know. You can add your voice to the choir here.

Now for the interesting part. Reader Vic has done a bit of digging through data and has noted…

I had some merry fun going through the countries. And while I know this not finished or necessarily representative, there is some really fascinating stuff (in fact, it’s the countries with a very small number of entries which fascinate me).

Atheists from Islamic and African countries tend to be young.

Atheists from Europe tend to have “Religious background: None” more often.

Post graduates, university and college people seem overrepresented regardless of nationality (but especially where entries are sparse, like Iran or Egypt)

The two atheists from North Korea (!) are female, same as the two Mongolians. Two of the three Saudi Arabians are female. The four from Kuwait are 50/50, the two from Kyrgizstan likewise.

And there is a single entry from Vatican State:

    Preferred title: Atheist
    Religious Background: Catholic
    Age: 65+
    Education Level: University or College
    Gender Identity: Male

Not quite sure what to make of that.

    He adds:

Also, if you want, you could add two atheists from Bhutan to the 50/50 male female ratio.
And in any country with more than a dozen entries I’ve seen, the term “atheist” is the preferred title by far. Even when added together, the people who identify as “rationalist”, “free-thinker”, “humanist”, “agnostic” or “secularist” make up less than 50% of entries.

Interesting, eh? THANKS Vic for your insights! It’s greatly appreciated and utterly fascinating.

Here’s the link to the census again.
