• Religious Double Standards #1532

Apparently there was some big sporting event on Sunday and a lot of people watched it. Also apparently during that sporting event there was this commercial for Scientology. Dusty Smith from Cult of Dusty modified the commercial only slightly and that is worth checking out.

It isn’t the commercial that I’m really interested in talking about today though. It is the Christian reaction to the Scientology commercial that I find interesting. You see, whenever Scientology comes up in conversations with the Christians, they start to mock Scientology and the religion’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard. But more than that, Christians get vicious in attacking Scientologists themselves. They regularly call famous Scientologists “stupid” or “gullible” and many other names.

The interesting thing is that when atheists criticize Christianity and mock the beliefs of Christians without actually calling Christians themselves names, we are told we are big meanies. We are also told that religious beliefs are above any kind of criticism and yet when Christians seem to have no probably being hateful toward Scientology.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending Scientology here. I think their religious beliefs are almost as ridiculous as the beliefs of Christians… almost. It is just that it is a little hypocritical of Christians to attack Scientologists and mock Scientology while at the same time crying persecution and calling atheists meanies when we criticize and mock their beliefs.

I’m an equal opportunity blasphemer. If you have ridiculous beliefs, I am going to criticize those beliefs and mock them. I don’t care if you believe in thetans or souls.
