• #Gamergate vs. #Elevatorgate

For those familiar with the “deep rifts” between the social justice warriors and dictionary atheists, the saga of GamerGate will seem fairly familiar. Like the atheist rifts, GamerGate was kicked off by a relatively commonplace event between a man and a woman, after which people online quickly scrambled to take sides supporting or opposing the woman in question, who literally (literally who?) became a cause célèbre and a personified proxy for the notion of standing up for woman’s rights against those “trying to assert their dudely privilege.” As with the atheist rifts, the social justice warriors arrayed against GamerGate occupy the commanding heights of established online media. And just like the atheist rifts, the social justice warriors of #StopGamerGate2014 have painted their opposition with the broad brush of the very worst abusers and harassers, not to mention deranged murderers such as Marc Lepine and Elliot Rodgers.

At least two comparison pieces have popped up so far:

I’m sure there are more out there, but these two are representative of opposing views. For once in my life, I will approvingly quote H.J. Hornbeck on the subject at hand, “GamerGate has been wall-to-wall deja-vu for me.”

And now, a prediction. Unlike atheist activists, gamers will have the good sense to ignore moralizing nonsense from progressive ideologues and go back to doing what they enjoy doing. Which is really what I should do right now, since my new copy of Bayonetta just came in.
