• FreeOK donation matching challenge

I’ve received a press release from the folks at FreeOK, and organization that I’ve worked with on occasion and which I strongly support. If you’d like to help them, now is a good time!

FREEOK ANNOUNCES A GENEROUS MATCHING CHALLENGE

Oklahoma City, OK July 27, 2014 – FreeOK is pleased to announce we have received a very generous offer from an anonymous donor to match donations to FreeOK up to $1,000! We are humbled and grateful for the show of support and very excited for the opportunity to make your donations to our conference go twice as far.

So, from now until August 3, 2014, all donations to FreeOK will be matched, up to a total of $1,000. Your donations enable us to not only to put on Oklahoma’s only annual freethought convention but  also helps us support our Humanist Giving projects throughout the year.

FreeOK is Oklahoma’s central humanist activism operation, placing emphasis on community involvement. Last year FreeOK produced more than 900 hours of volunteer service to our community, and with your support we can meet or exceed that this year.

This year our convention is expanding to two fun filled and informative days, over the weekend of August 9-10 at the Tulsa Convention Center. Tickets are only $40 for two days. We have partnered with CampQuestOK to offer a fun and educational child care option, and there will be a blood drive all weekend.

We are very excited about this year’s interesting and diverse speaker line-up:

    1. Steve Wells – the author of the Skeptic’s Annotated Bible and Drunk with Blood: God’s killings in the Bible. He also created and maintains the website  www.skepticsannotatedbible.com and the blog “Dwindling in Unbelief.”

    2. Faisal Saeed Al Mutar – the founder of the Global Secular Humanist Movement and Secular Post.

    3. Kelly Damerow – Director of Federal and State Affairs for the Secular Coalition for America.

    4. Conor Robinson – the founder of Yale’s Humanist Society and Pathfinders Project, a yearlong global humanist service trip.

    5. Jamila Bey – journalist and Director of Communications for the Secular Student Alliance.

    6. David G. McAfee – a journalist and author of Mom, Dad, I’m an Atheist: The Guide to Coming Out as a Non-believer and Disproving Christianity and other Secular Writings. He is also a frequent contributor to American Atheist Magazine.

    7. CJ  Werleman- best selling author. His latest offering,  ‘Crucifying America’ (The Unholy Alliance Between the Christian Right and Wall Street) is arguably his best work to date.

    8. Nate Phelps – LGBT activist and son of Pastor Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church.

    9. David Goodrich – former Director of Climate Observations and Monitoring for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Additionally, there will be a screening of “Chasing Ice”, the important and award-winning documentary on climate change. Deploying untested equipment and braving some of the harshest conditions in the world, National Geographic photographer James Balog and his team chronicled the rapid melting of the arctic polar ice. This beautiful and important film is something everyone should see, and soon.
