• On IQ-related pejoratives

I honestly don’t see the point in calling someone “stupid” or “retarded” or “moronic” or “idiotic” or what-have-you.

If they really are relatively unintelligent, you’re not going to help them become any smarter by being insulting to them.

If they are merely ignorant on some point, you are not going to help them learn anything by being insulting to them.

If they are merely annoying you, why resort to personal insults? Does that ever really work?

I can think of situations in which all of those words are appropriate, but I honestly cannot think of how they might possibly be useful in civil discourse when applied specifically to one’s interlocutor. I’m not going to go so far as to say I’m banning “stupid” because maybe I (stupidly) overlooked some excellent usage of these terms. You are welcome to correct me, of course.
