• Very local politics (OKC)

Trigger warning: Informational hyperlocavorism. International and other out-of-state readers may not find this particular post of any great interest.

All politics is local, but some are more local than others

About one week ago, the UCO Skeptics and Oklahoma Atheists invited one of the OKC mayoral candidates to come share his thoughts on how to move the metro area forward. He didn’t say anything particularly radical or unusual, indeed, much of his platform may be characterized as at attempt to get our fair city caught up to comparably sized metropolitan areas in terms of public infrastructure and the robustness of the built environment. In the first of these two videos, he talks mostly about that, and in the second of the two he gets peppered with questions from a fairly friendly audience.

Dr. Shadid talks for a bit about overcoming “shame and stigma” and why it is important for members of culturally marginalized groups (such as addicts and atheists) to follow the example of the LGBT communities and learn to become increasingly open about who they are. That’s a bold stance to take, and he backs it up by being willing to meet with our groups, even though he is neither an atheist nor a skeptic himself.
